Under the Beach Umbrella
For my 3D design class, our group decided to make an inflatable to focus on the space provided under a beach umbrella. The original design was a rain umbrella with a large inner handle but through trial and error, we decided as a group that a beach umbrella with an inner rope handle would work out better. Working with solely recycled plastic bags was definitely a learning experience. Using different mediums is always interesting. Going into this project with no idea how the bags would look when they were inflated, I think our project was a success. By fusing six rectangles, six triangles and a floor mat, we were able to create a spacious cavity within the plastic bags. I think I can speak for our whole group when I say we were very happy with the result, and it definitely felt like we were sitting in the beach under an umbrella with the sun shinning down on us.

Self Portrait
Using all paper materials, I built a replica of my own head twice as large. After building the frame to the demensions of my face, I covered the frame with torn paper bag peices. I chose torn paper bag for more of an organic look. For the hair, because I am a blonde, I used gold and yellow poster board. I attempted to duplicate the way I wear my hair and how it lays on the sides of my face. I used newspaper clippings for my eye color and made round cardbord balls behnid them. Overall I am happy with my piece but after seeing it grouped with my classmates there are definetly a few changes I would make.
Sloth
Given the term "sloth" as a concept for this project I wanted to show laziness and carelessness, but also wanted to make a piece I was proud of. I settled on a spherical shape to show the figure does not have a solid base, much like a slothful person wouldn’t have. For the outer pattern of the sphere, the geometric pattern was created for visual interest and to play off of the other rough or unfinished side. The contrast of the finished to unfinished is how I wanted to convey sloth, without leaving a project half done. Having never worked with plaster before I really enjoyed this opportunity and learning more about this medium.

Found Letters
“RESIST” is spelled out in six photographic images depicting discovered letters found in and around abandoned buildings throughout the Denver area. This word and the images that portray it convey the urban decay found in and on the structures we pass by everyday. Structures that remain standing through economic hardship, diminished by time and lack of resources, are testaments to resistance. The images echo a culture holding strong in difficult times.
